Here we are.

January 17th, 2007 — 9:05pm

We’ve finally broken down and done it. We hope this is a more effective way to keep in touch than mass emails or a family newsletter (I wanted to do a 16-page hand-copied-and-stapled zine, but Anna put the kabosh on that idea).

So here it is, bad default Wordpress style and all. With any luck I’ll be able to spruce things up in my copious free time. Right.

As of right now, I’m just about done with my medical exams, Anna is getting ready to start hers. The only remaining major item on the checklist will be receiving our criminal records from the FBI. Hopefully they won’t need to charter a truck to haul Anna’s over here. We went to the local sheriff’s office to get fingerprinted and got the app sent in before Christmas. Getting a good fingerprint takes quite a bit of skill and effort. In the words of the Cabrillo college pre-cop trainee, “Gosh, I don’t know how anyone does this with someone who’s really drunk.”

In the best possible world, our medical and police records will get cozy right soon with a couple of work visa applications and take the short trip down to the Kiwi Konsulate in Los Angeles. Anna claims they’ve got a turnaround measured in days. Here’s hoping.

Off to a flying start

January 1st, 2007 — 3:19pm

Anna and I returned from New Orleans on New Years Eve, the grey ghost making its usual blistering progress over Hwy17 before depositing us in our warm and cozy bed, just in time for the New Year … in the central time zone.

Anna succumbed to sleep, while I pushed on into the night. At midnight, I climbed aboard my trusty steed for a quick round of the neighborhood. The deep winter cold of California kept me from going out for long. And the drunk drivers. And the neighbor kids having a roman candle gunfight. Ah, sweet sleep.

As the new year dawned, so too did our emigration responsibilities. Must be paper pushing time.
