Everyone’s a winner…
It was bike to work week last week. So I did.
At the celebratory breakfast, I, and nearly everyone else at my table, won a door prize:

What are those credit card looking things you ask? and why would you need 4 of them?
Glad you asked, because I did.
In the slow, dulcet tones used for soothing infants and the insane my co-workers explained that those are scrapers. you know, for scraping ice off your windshield. Do they not have winter where you come from?
If anyone wants one, I’ve got a couple spares.

Kiwi bikes have windshields?

As an additional bonus, the cards have “safe winter driving tips” printed on them.
Just in case you forget things like “drive to conditions” and “allow plenty of time”

That would be where you pull out your massive chunk of plastic with the ergonomic handle and brush attachment and say “That’s not a scraper- this is a scraper”

All last winter I tried to find a proper ice scraper – all to no avail. You know those round displays in the front of gas stations that have mittens, hats, ice scrapers and lock de-icer? well they’ve got those here, except, they’re stocked with mittens, hats, mittens and hats. Polite inquires met with blank stares of bafflement (gas station attendents share some commonalities with their US counterparts.)
It pains me to say it, but I’m thinking of bringing one home with me the next time I visit the states.

Want us to ship you one sooner? Winter is in its last throes here in Ithaca; we could probably get you one for a penny or two here, which would make shipping almost reasonable!
Are those reflective strips like the slappy wrist things we used to wear? The thing you whacked on your arm and it would magically curl around you (and cut you)?

They are indeed ‘slap bracelet’ ankle cuffs. I have to say it’s the most brilliant application of the technology I’ve ever seen (well, they work great in the living room, I haven’t tried one-handed application while rushing out the door yet.)
