Dignity in adversity

February 24th, 2011 — 8:55pm

We’ve made some progress on our number one problem. Water is coming out of the taps again, and it looks pretty good. Unfortunately, dahlias are not a good bio-indicator of microbial contamination, so we’ll be boiling for the time being.

Sadly, there’s been no movement on our number two problem….

A bit more news/tedium

February 24th, 2011 — 7:02am

Morning of day three and we’re definitely in the post-disaster wait here in the suburbs. Our situation is stable: the house seems intact, we have food and water cached. We’re very lucky to have power and internet. Supplies are starting to make it to the city, there shouldn’t be any deprivation. Mains water is off and the sewers are damaged, so there are questions of sanitation, and we’ll be hauling water from the local water truck for a while. The major theme: tedium. Work, school and most services are closed. We’ll connect with friends, check on the neighbors, work in the garden and just wait. Try to find a way to help in our community.

We haven’t wandered far afield, so we don’t have much additional information. Honestly, our only news advantage is the continuous radio/TV coverage.

We’ll be heading out for a walk today, see if we can find groceries and more information. Let’s see what we see.

We’re OK

February 22nd, 2011 — 9:02pm

6.3 quake today around 1 PM. Much closer to town than last time. Gridlock on the roads, collapsed buildings and fires downtown, but we’re all OK. We’ll post more in the morning…

The best way to extract all of the money out of my wallet?

Hang a sign outside your cafe that says “Coffee and Waffle $6″

Oh. Yes.
